Wye Garden Open Day

Published by Delia Copland under About Wye

 Wye Gardens Open

If you enjoy visiting gardens whilst simultaneously supporting charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Help the Hospices, then come and see some local gardens in the National Gardens Scheme this coming Sunday, 5th July.

Starting in the centre of Wye village – where home-made teas are available – four unusual gardens are open from 2 until 6 p.m.

Cumberland Court in Church Street is an exciting courtyard garden created in 1999 from an asphalt car park.  Densely planted with a wide range of unusual plants.  Water feature and unique artefacts.  New garden room.

Kent House in Scotton Street is a small narrow garden divided into five very different areas including shade, lawn and herbaceous, vegetables and semi-wild.

Mistral in Oxenturn Road is a garden developed, in part, in the site of an old hard tennis court.  250 species of botanical interest including white and alpine gardens.  All plants labelled.  Mini outdoor theatre recently added.

3 Bramble Close (off Bramble Lane) is a very wild garden planted in 1989.  Wild flower meadow, pond and ditches, mown paths, native copse and hedges buzzing with wildlife – a unique experience.  Research work on effect on wildlife being carried out.

The National Garden Scheme has donated more than £23 million to charity in the last 10 years and Kent alone raised £150,000 last year.  A combined admission ticket (available at any of the gardens above) covers all four gardens and costs just £4 (children free).  Come and join us on Sunday afternoon!

Agricultural education on the move?

wyeweb has received this newspaper cutting from the Daily Telegraph of Friday 26th 2009 indicating that Wmm. Morrisons the supermarket has already purchased a farm in Scotland and is anticipating opening a research centre in the south east of England. Perhaps there is hope for Wye yet?

Celebration Day for the life of Wye College has arrived

Published by Editor under About Wye

Today has dawned bright, warm and with that Wye beauty that only long-lived residents would recognise as typical of June in Wye. We will have many of those who have enjoyed the hospitality of the village and who have careers that have gained from the provision of an education that was second to none. So today is in so many ways a celebration of things past for the people of Wye and the College alumni. Of course, in our minds will also be the anxieties for the future of the College; meanwhile wyeweb wishes villagers and those associated with Wye College a wonderful day of celebration and the best for the future – whatever it may bring.
