Earlier on this month I published an article following the discovery of a whole page advertising feature in the Kentish Express in 1969. I picked out two or three shops in the feature hoping they would prompt some memories for our About Wye/Wye Memories file. In this article I am going to bring to your attention three more businesses that no longer exist in our village.

Many of us will remember Taylors Garage in Bridge Street. This was demolished a few years ago and Twysdon Court, a housing development now stands on the site. During the late eighties and nineties the Rover Garage was owned by Brian Horn and Alan Heron. (Sadly no longer with us.) At one time Brian and Alan employed seven members of staff, it was a thriving business. Before that, the Garage was owned by the Lepper family.

Also in the Kentish Express 60′s feature there is an advertisement for F.G. & H.M. Cox Ltd, Antiques located at 3 Church Street. This is now Wye Saddlery and was previously Grace’s Hairdressers.
At the bottom of the page of Wye advertisements, G.R. Holland claims to be ‘Wye’s Oldest Shop’ a general store located next to Swan House on the corner of Little Chequers opposite the Chemist (Now demolished). The proprietor of this shop was by all accounts a bit of a character. His name was Lordy Hollands. No one seems to recall how this gentleman got the name Lordy, but the general recollection of those that grew up in Wye , is that if Lordy was in business today, he wouldn’t score too highly with the health and safety department. I have been told that the boys from nearby Knackholt would send Lordy out the back of the shop on a fool’s errand whilst they ‘nicked’ the sweets. Obviously no Community Warden in those days!
For the record, if any locals logged on can add to this little bit of Wye’s history please let us have your memories. It does help to paint a picture of Wye in a time gone by.

Wye Crown Bonfire - Shadows
Wye Bonfire Society
January 23rd 2009 7:30 New Flying Horse
Wye Bonfire Society is well and truly up and running now after a meeting on January 23rd 2009 in the hospitable surroundings of the New Flying Horse.
Those present, (Ann and Peter Sutherland, Errol Roberts, Nick Williams, Jack Woodford, Brian and Kathy Roberts, Don Thake) will be familiar to those who have followed the activities that led to last year’s very successful bonfire and firework display. It was on the basis of that success that a small caucus have embraced the idea of a permanent society that will ensure the future of the bonfire.
