Kerry Bethel who has done and given so much to Wye
Over the last few weeks a dialogue has been building up on Wye web of memories about Wye from people who grew up in Wye. If you would like to follow these events click on About Wye at the top of the page and go to Wye Memories, here you will find a record of living history. To add to these events, below is an article recording an incredible event which took place over a period of ten days in the summer of 1996. It was led by two of the most public spirited men in our village John Morris and Kerry Bethel together with the then Chairman of the Parish Council John Rogers and the Vice Chairman Peter Hubble.
John Morris has served our village twice on the Parish Council, he served 28 years in the Wye retained Fire Service and continues to contribute to the Village he grew up in. John will be seen shortly helping to put up our Village Christmas Lights and helping with our Christmas Street Party.
WYE WEEK
Back in 1993 Ashford Borough Council put on an festival called Create. Peter Hubble our Vice PC Chairman came up with the idea of Wye running it’s own similar festival. And so with the help of Christine Fuller of Ashford Borough Council Wye Week was born! John, Kerry, our Parish Council Chairman and his Vice Chairman formed a committee and it went from there. They asked people in the village what they would like to do for Wye Week. Naturally some good ideas came forth. With some clever persuasion it was suggested that people took their ideas and put them into action.
The result being that the whole village pulled together with great enthusiasm encouraged by this dynamic committee who then put the structure of the ten day programme together. (Here we must remember that most people involved were not retired then.)
As always in any organisation a treasurer is required and on this occasion Mary Barret stepped into the breach as an unpaid treasurer. We are told she took on a mighty big job. Mary as ever, always generous with her portions of community spirit carried out an excellent job one of great responsibility.
A Marquee was hired and positioned on The Green Churchfield Way. Electricity and water was the next requirement. John Morris arranged for a stand pipe and electricity to be laid on. We are told that ABC were very helpful on this. Kerry remembers how the army at Templar Barracks went out of their way to lend equipment, likewise Wye College. Of course where would they have been without our ever helpful public spirited farmer Richard Long? The then Parish Council generated the funds required, gave great support and were also very active helping with the event. Continue Reading »
