Imperial College’s Case for Abandoning Wye

Firstly thanks to Anne and Delia for their representation of Wye at the Civic Centre hearings of the DPD. Mary Braithwaite has been an assiduous burrower on our behalf and has communicated the following request not only to wyeweb but also to WwHPC and WFG. We are publishing here te case that Imperial College will make to rescind the conditions imposed by the ABC. You will see the conventional (non-blue-sky) thinking that Savills and IC have adopted to find an alternative use for Wye College and also the hurdles that they place on anyone else coming forward with possible educational uses for the site. It is also useful to see for ourselves copies of the brochure that were so hard to come by when the site was being “advertised”. However, better late than never, as the old saying goes. It will be of interest to recognise the financial details that again have been unavailable to any third parties. So we would like to thank Mary for her stalwart efforts both in these matters and the establishment of her bakery – that shows real commitment to the well-being of our community. ICL EiP Statement Jun 10 (with appendices)

Dear All,

As you may know I have been trying to obtain information from Imperial (under FOI) concerning its marketing and plans for sites and buildings at Wye. Last year, in spite of several FOI requests, they refused to provide information from Minutes of College Fund Board meetings. In January this year I made a complaint to the Information Commissioner, which has been negotiated in recent weeks. I am not happy with the result, as my specific request – for information on the marketing of and plans for sites and buildings at Wye, for educational or other uses – has fundamentally not been provided. I cannot believe that the Minutes of College Fund Board meetings do not contain relevant information (see Imperial’s message to me below). They have attached a document, which I presume is already in the public domain as it pertains to the DPD. It may be relevant to the current DPD sessions, if you do not already have it. I intend to pursue my request (although the Information Commissioner’s Case Worker gives the impression of accepting Imperial’s argument) – so any advice you can give on what to do next would be very welcome!

Kind regards
Mary (Braithwaite)

She will check for legal compliance and establish soundness, testing if the DPD is justified, effective and consistent with national policy.

The Examination hearings will be taking place in the Council Chamber at Ashford Borough Council, Civic Centre, Tannery Lane, Ashford.  Wye appears on the agenda as follows:

Tuesday 22 June from 10 a.m. (ALL DAY)

University of Buckingham objects to the Withersdane Care Home Application

Terence Kealey, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buckingham, has written to ABC Planning and Development Department to object to Imperial College’s Withersdane Care Home Application 10/00116/AS. Dr Kealey opposes the proposed plans by Imperial College to convert Withersdane Hall into a care village development and demolish the existing halls of residence and related buildings also on the site. The University of Buckingham, in association with a group of Wye alumni, is planning the creation of an independent university college of liberal arts and agricultural sciences at the Wye College campus, which is an initiative designed to harness the burgeoning independent sector of higher education in the UK.
